Who created this message?

The Lake Erie Native American Council and other local Ohio Native Americans have protested the Cleveland baseball team’s offensive branding and imagery. This shirt was worn in protest of Chief Wahoo the team mascot before a home opener game in 2018.

What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?

The image uses bright colors, strong words in all capital letters like ENOUGH! and OVER 100 YEARS OF RACISM and the red cancel symbol to draw attention and make their point clear.

How might different people interpret this message differently than me?

Representatives of the team claim there is an intention to honor Native Americans and that it can be done in a way which keeps the current representations that had been in place for years.

What viewpoints or world views are included or left out of this message?

The viewpoints included in this message are those of Native Americans. They find the "Indians" name and mascot to be degrading as opposed to honoring. The mascot is a caricature image that uses red face when the term "redskin" is widely considered to be offensive.

Why is this message being sent?

The Native American community has been trying for decades to get sports teams like Cleveland and also schools to change their team names and mascots to be less offensive and more inclusive to all. The Chief Wahoo mascot was officially retired in 2018 and the Cleveland Indians finally changed their team name to the Cleveland Guardians in 2022.
