Pretty Hurts

Pretty Hurts

The song was performed by Beyonce and written by Sia under the Columbia label in 2014.

I think the message behind the song is that there is a lot of pressure to feel pretty on the outside, even if on the inside we are all falling apart. In today’s society, with all the social media, it’s hard to look beyond the surface and we compare ourselves to others so much. The message behind the song is that beauty on the outside is not worth losing your happiness. It also portrays many unhealthy habits in the video of how some women attempt to fit certain expectations of beauty standards.

The song is performed by an incredibly popular musician, which can draw attention quickly because you’re always waiting for the next big thing from a favorite artist. The lyrics are catchy and in the lyrics, you hear common phrases used in the beauty industry; she even refers to Vogue magazine.  In the music video itself, it has a long intro, which can intrigue some people into seeing what will happen next. It uses the backdrop of beauty pageants, and in the intro, you see how unhappy the girls are which matches the tone of the music. The video is darker in color which resonates with the lyrics as well.

It might be difficult for some to accept the message because although it is a valuable lesson to consider your mental wellness over your outer beauty, the song is performed by a beautiful and wealthy singer. Yes, she faces pressure to look and act a certain way, but she may not be relatable in the sense of everyday struggles with beauty expectations. In the video, it portrays women in the pageant industry, and everyday women struggle with these same expectations, too, which is not perceived in this particular video.

Lyrics

Mama said, you're a pretty girl

What's in your head it doesn't matter

Brush your hair, fix your teeth

What you wear is all that matters

Just another stage

Pageant the pain away

This time I'm gonna take the crown

Without falling down, down

Pretty hurts

Shine the light on whatever's worse

Perfection is the disease of a nation

Pretty hurts

Shine the light on whatever's worse

Tryna fix something

But you can't fix what you can't see

It's the soul that needs the surgery

Blonder hair, flat chest

TV says bigger is better

South beach, sugar free

Vogue says

Thinner is better

Just another stage

Pageant the pain away

This time I'm gonna take the crown

Without falling down, down, down

Pretty hurts

Shine the light on whatever's worse

Perfection is the disease of a nation

Pretty hurts

Shine the light on whatever's worse

Tryna fix something

But you can't fix what you can't see

It's the soul that needs the surgery

Ain't no doctor or therapeutic that can take the pain away

The pain's inside

And nobody frees you from your body

It's the soul that needs surgery

It's my soul that needs surgery

Plastic smiles and denial can only take you so far

And you break when the paper signs you in the dark

You left a shattered mirror

And the shards of a beautiful girl

Pretty hurts

Shine the light on whatever's worse

Perfection is the disease of a nation

Pretty hurts

Shine the light on whatever's worse

Tryna fix something

But you can't fix what you can't see

It's the soul that needs the surgery

When you're alone all by yourself

And you're lying in your bed

Reflection stares right into you

Are you happy with yourself

It's just a way to masquerade

The illusion has been shed

Are you happy with yourself

Are you happy with yourself

Yes
