I played a lot of video games as a child and the most memorable toys for me were the Pokemon Game Boy games. The following commercial is one that I remember seeing around the time I was getting into the hobby.

  1. Who created this message? Nintendo and/or Game Freak, the publisher and developer of the Pokémon Red and Blue games, respectively.
  2. What creative techniques are used to attract my attention? The advertisement includes the animated renditions of the Pokémon. These are what children would see when watching the show and they are being used to sell the game. It was a fantastic tactic because the lower quality Game Boy animations were assisted by the provided TV show cartoons.
  3. How might different people interpret this message differently than me? Before the reveal of the Game Boy, it does look like you are harming your collection of Pokémon (which share similarities with pets). From an outsider's point of view, capturing pets to add to you collection isn't presented as a nice relationship. This is in contrast to the show which was all about befriending your Pokémon to unlock their potential and have as friends.
  4. What viewpoints or world views are included or left out of this message? Choosing an obsessive bus driver instead of a child to represent your player-base may be a tactic to signal to adults and "give permission" it is ok to play this game. Other player-bases are not represented in this advertisement, including women. In another commercial the bus driver reappears looking in awe of the teenagers trading Pokémon via Link Cable.
  5. Why is this message being sent? This advertisement is communicating the obsessive nature of the Pokémon slogan: "Gotta Catch 'Em All." Potentially to normalize it for the viewers.
