2. What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?
Janelle and Tessa Thompson enter a club where there are a lot of gender fluid people dressed in retro and futuristic styles. A number of people looking like Bowie. The video pays a lot of homage to Prince and his Kiss video in the lighting and apparently Prince helped on Janelle on that album. I thought there was an homage to Robert Palmer and his solo videos as well.
3. How might different people understand this message differently than me?
I think people who did not feel comfortable with their own sexuality or with LGBTQ+ sexuality would find the message and imagery shocking. They might feel that it promotes a lifestyle that they do not personally find acceptable.
4. What values, lifestyles and points of view are represented in, or omitted from, this message?
LGBTQ+ lifestyles and viewpoints are represented in this video. There are a lot of pretty young people of different races and sexualities. Janelle herself has come out as pansexual and the part in the video where she dances between Tessa Thompson and a black man and finally dances with both of them is pretty obvious in its meaning. Omitted are the old and judgmental.
5. Why is this message being sent?
Since she started to become popular a lot of questions have been asked about her sexuality. At one point, Janelle deflected the questions by saying she was an android. The message of this video seems to be speaking about her pansexuality and that it's about the way you make me feel and not one's gender.
