How Many Weren't Filmed?
Who created this message?
This appears to be a young person who is supporting BIPOC rights, with the insinuation that this photo likely came after one of the filmed murders of a person of color due to police brutality.
What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?
The individual drew two symbols representing a clenched black fist, which represents black power and is tied to the Black Lives Matter movement.
How might different people interpret this message differently than me?
Some people may not appreciate many things about this image. Right down to the mask. Their sign is in reference to the fact that many slayings of people of color are not caught on camera, but rather swept under the rug. When video is taken, people can hear, see, and almost feel right in the moment. It's not a news article anymore that people can read over like it's another day in America (which is horrible that I can even say that about the country we live in), but rather everything becomes very real and human. You can hear the fear in the victims voices, or cries for their mom, though even when being recorded and the police are aware of that, so many times the fate is still the same, and people of color die. People that don't have an understanding of how longstanding and deep rooted this issue is could say "don't break the law" but that's an incredibly insensitive and uneducated statement. Systemic racism runs deep, and if you step back and pay attention, you can see that white people aren't treated the same way BIPOC people are in the face of the law, and it's not an even playing field in the arrests, sentencing, and treatment in jail/prison.
What viewpoints or world views are included or left out of this message?
I think any world views that support white supremacy are left out, the sign is very overt and the symbols bolster the message as well.
Why is this message being sent?
This message is being sent to bring light to the idea that the country can rise up after a slaying of a BIPOC individual after viewing a video of a singular instance, but it happens everyday in varying levels. How many people die, are injured, or treated unjustly without an uproar, or even a spot in the paper?
