Recently I've been thinking about buying a new bed. My current one is fine, but I've had it a long time and I am looking for a change or upgrade to my bedroom. As I've been browsing numerous reviews online and looking for the best one (because buying a bed doesn't happen every day and I want to make sure I'm happy with my purchase!), the Thuma bed has come up more than once. In fact, I've seen ads for it not only online, but suprisingly in my mailbox ad packs and coupon collections as well. It's not a cheap option, but I like the modern look and promise of lasting the test of time.

Who created this message?

This message was created by the company Thuma. Thuma, a San Francisco based company, was founded in 2018 and designed to be a self-assembling solid wood mattress platform.

What creative techniques are used to attract my attention?

Personally, I am attracted to the simple and modern style.  Even the mere simplicity of the ad and quote across the screen gets the point across that it is built to last. When visiting their website (because the ad attracted me to delve further into the product), I am taken to a clean looking website that advertises elevated design, quality craftsmanship, and modern convenience. Their website is easy to navigate and it makes the whole process of buying and assembling look easy.

How might different people understand this message differently than me?

People who already have a good bed or who are not in the market for buying a new one would find no interest in this message. Because I am potentially in the market, I am attracted to this ad and my interest is piqued enough to research and look in to it further. Those that aren't into a simple and modern styles would see this ad very differently than those that are as well.

What values, lifestyles, and points of view are represented in, or omitted from, this message?

The ad I saw on Instagram, and took the screenshot of above, is actually a video ad. It shows what appears to be a white heterosexual couple assembling the bed together fast and easy, which makes it feel like the ad is targeted to a certain demographic. It seems like people of color or different sexualities are omitted. However, upon visiting their Instagram page or actual website I see a lot more diversity represented.

Why is this message being sent?

This message is probably all over my screens because I was recently searching for a bed. It's a targeted ad for me, trying to convince me to buy their product. Wherever this ad may be displayed, it is generally out there to promote the company Thuma and get people to buy their products.
