As ChatGPT has become publicly available, there are many discussions and controversies around using the tool. For this #deconstruction blog post, I wanted to focus on a demonstration of ChatGPT that included extended conversation with the chat bot.

  1. Who created this message? This YouTube video was created by the Linus Tech Tips channel. The video was hosted by Linus and a couple of his team members who read the the paid sponsor ad spots (Hubspot CRM). OpenAI's ChatGPT bot was also involved in the creation of this message.
  2. What creative techniques are used to attract my attention? ChatGPT, the trained language model chat bot was showcased giving advice and direction to build a computer. Although this video was relatively long, it was a good demonstration of the conversational nature of the chat bot and the power of such a tool. Excitement and novelty were also present throughout the video.
  3. How might different people interpret this message differently than me? ChatGPT remains controversial in many circles as people feel it may replace certain writing tasks and other responsibilities people have in their work. Many teachers have expressed concern that this will enable cheating in writing assignments. In other words, while it is demonstrated as an exciting and useful tool, some individuals feel it may negatively impact learning environments.
  4. What viewpoints or world views are included or left out of this message? The individuals seen on camera throughout the video are exclusively white men. This video doesn't delve into some of the controversies and real concerns people have about this technology. In this instance, it is lifted up as an advancement without much discussion of the problems it may promote.
  5. Why is this message being sent? With ChatGPT's recent public release, it is a hot topic at the moment. There is a lot of excitement about the effect this could have on our lives, not to mention concerns that people have expressed. When will conversations with a chat bot become indistinguishable from a person? It may be sooner than we realize.
