Be the Change...

Be the Change...

1. Who created the ad? This is an advertisement created by students at the Anne Arundel Community College. They were made as part of an art display for their commons in December 2017, but were also noted to be use for protests as needed. There were a variety of posters that were created featuring images about the right to vote, gun control, hunger, and other political topics.

2.     What creative techniques were used? In this poster, it used images of people of different races and gender with the American flag superimposed on them. The words are in vibrant, bold, red print and give a clear message, “Be the Change, Be the Vote.” By using images of different races and gender, the goal is for every person to see themselves represented in the poster and be inspired to vote to make a difference in their community, state, and nation.

3. How might different people interpret this message differently than me? One thing I noticed while looking at this poster is that it appears inclusive of races and genders. Something missing though is the complete college demographic. Some of the college demographic that is excluded that sees this may think that their vote doesn’t matter. It doesn’t include families, older people, professors, or other staff. Someone could look at this and think that they are not included or required to make the change, but that younger people will be doing it. It may also be interpreted that only those at the college are included making these changes, and that those not in school, aren’t qualified to make a difference or vote for those changes.

4. What viewpoints or world views are included or left out of this message? This poster was made by college students and displayed in a college setting. Although they did include multiple races and genders, they are all young students. This does not include all populations that might be at this college or that might vote. It leaves out the older generation, families, and workers.

5. Why is this message being sent? The purpose of this poster is to encourage people, regardless of race, to vote. By including people of different races and genders, they encourage you to see yourself in the poster and reflect on how you can be the change you want to see in the world… and to vote for it. In this case, the poster is showing that race is not a factor for our future, that we can ALL be part of choosing it and making a difference.
