I'm in serious shit, I feel totally lost
If I'm asking for help it's only because
Being with you has opened my eyes
Could I ever believe such a perfect surprise?
I keep asking myself, wondering how
I keep closing my eyes but I can't block you out
Want to fly to a place where it's just you and me
Nobody else so we can be free
Nobody else so we can be free
All the things she said
All the things she said
Running through my head
Running through my head
- The song All the Things She Said by t.A.T.u. (a small Russian pop group) is a queer song that focuses on developing feelings between two women. “T.A.T.u was formed in 1999 by music producer Ivan Shapovalov and his business partner, who wanted to create a Russian musical project with teenage girls at the centre.” (https://junkee.com/tatu-history/284243).
- The song is emotional, as well as the music video. It was a huge pop hit, and fit right into the edgy music scene of 2002. They use a muted color scheme in the video, which almost gives it a jail-like feel, which goes along with the theme that the two individuals are trapped with feelings they can’t outwardly explore.
- I think the clear answer here is that anybody who is homophobic would detest this music video. The song alone could get away with being played without most noticing the context, but the video, really gives it a new light. The name t.A.T.u is also a shortened version of a Russian phrase meaning “this girl loves that girl”. I think if people knew the origin of the name, the song wouldn’t have reached as far, or maybe it would have, but not within certain communities.
- The controversial part of all of this is that the two women who sung this song, and acted in a music video portraying these feelings, in fact spoke out about gay relationships. One of the women saying she would condemn her son if he came out as gay. As time went on, it came out that the inception of the band was all a Gay for Pay marketing strategy by the bands producer, Shapovalov. What’s ironic is that despite this, the comments on the music video on YouTube seem to reflect that the video was an “awakening”, so despite their intentions and words, they still impacted the gay community in some way.
- The song is sad, and describes feelings of being lost, and wanting to escape with the girl she is in love with. Those are real emotions, and real issues. This message is being sent to fetishize a community for money in my opinion.
